The SRAM Red Component Group combines innovation, performance, and light weight in ways that no previous kit has. SRAM may have taken a couple of decades to get into the road market, but with the launch of its SRAM Force and SRAM Rival component groups, it made a good impression with its first shot. SRAM Red came along a year later to solidify SRAM’s position as a serious option for high-end roadies.
SRAM Red’s DoubleTap shifters with zero-loss travel provide instant shifting. If you’ve ever ridden Shimano’s 10-speed Dura Ace, it’s a great reference point. SRAM Red makes that seem slow. SRAM Red shifters also feature adjustable reach for both the brake and shift levers, making riders of all sizes more comfortable. SRAM further increased Red’s shifting performance with its OpenGlide cassette, on which the largest 8 cogs are actually machined out of one solid piece of steel.
It sounds heavy, but it’s light like titanium offerings and has far more stiffness and durability. Continuing in the vein of shifting performance, SRAM Red cranksets use proprietary chainrings to offer the kind of confident, predictable shifts you’d previously only get from Shimano Dura Ace or Campagnolo Record. The crank arms and spider are carbon and quite stiff, and the bottom bracket uses ceramic hybrid bearings.
Plus, the finish and graphics look better than anything out there. Red’s rear derailleur uses the same 1:1 actuation ratio as their mountain derailleurs to keep shifts fast and smooth. They pack it full of ceramic bearings, carbon fiber, and titanium because nerds like us go bonkers for that stuff. Finally, Red’s brakes offer a linear, predictable, and powerful action that will haul you back down from the intense speeds you’re sure to see with you new SRAM Red Component Group.
